Neurofeedback:  Review of Bio-Explorer

Hi Folks,

This article is focused upon the Bio-Explorer Neurofeedback system (Independent - We have no financial stake).  The Bio-Explorer neurofeedback system was linked with a 2 Channel USB EEG, which weighed about as much as a pack of Bic pens.  The neurofeedback EEG amplifier was very light weight, which could be considered a benefit if you prefer portability, but this could also be a draw back, because the very lightweight plastic means that it slides around very easily if placed on a desk, and you get the sense that you could break the neurofeedback device very easily if dropped on a hard surface.

The Bio-Explorer neurofeedback software was generally acceptable in terms of raw performance for calculating EEG data and play-back to the user. The neurofeedback software is also relatively robust for developers who are interested in interfacing with the system in order to design their own protocols, hardware interface, and for general experimental neurofeedback applications.

However, the Bio-Explorer neurofeedback software also appears to be in significant need of an upgrade to it's Graphical User Interface, which resembles a Windows 95 or earlier system.  Compared with the IBVA neurofeedback system, the Brain Master, Thought Technologies neurofeedback system, and others . . . It's UI needs to be upgraded.

This system is also utilized as a component of the "Neureeka!" Peak Performance and Peak Happiness Trainer, which serves as evidence that the Bio-Explorer neurofeedback software may certainly be integrated into a commercialized neurofeedback system.

However, the Graphical User Interface is probably not best for presentation to clients who will wonder whether they are receiving the most up-to-date neurofeedback training or if they are using an outdated piece of software.

Once more, I must emphasize that this is not necessarily a functional limitation but rather an aesthetic limitation.  However, I must also acknowledge that this neurofeedback system does provide a 3D User Interface, which is reasonably appealing from a visual perspective, and I present that below.

The below image provides you with a basic illustration of the form of neurofeedback 2-CH dongle that we utilized during testing, but this is not necessarily exclusive to Bio-Explorer.  Their software is compatible with multiple hardware types.
