Have you been feeling blue lately? Have you been feeling like things that once mattered to you just aren’t important anymore? Have you thought that life just wasn’t worth it? If you have thought about any of these things or had similar thoughts then it is likely that you are depressed. The first thing to know is that you are not your depression. This disease can be very debilitating and it can stampede every area of your life but you can still live your life and hopefully overcome your depression. About three months ago I realized that I was depressed. It got very bad and I had to be in a hospital for almost a week. While I was there I learned that I let my life get so overwhelming and those overwhelming thoughts just took over my life. I had lost control of my life or as I came to find out I had never really had control in the first place. I was still stuck in a depressed mode for a while after even though I convinced myself that I was happy. Finally, one morning I woke up and while watching a YouTube video on depression, I just knew my life needed to change. I continued to do more research, talk to counselors and figure out what needed to change for me to get past my depression and live a happy life. The most important thing that I found was to stay active. Even while doing everything else that was needed to overcome my depression I had to stay active. If I didn’t stay active I got depressed again and stopped making progress. If you are feeling depressed staying active can help you in so many ways. What are some of the ways that staying active can help you overcome depression? Staying active is very important in the process of overcoming depression. When someone is trying to overcome their depression and lead a normal life again they will need to stay active. Throughout my journey of overcoming depression, I had found that when I was staying active I was making more progress than when I was not active. You can be active by walking around when you are talking on the phone to a support person. You can stay active by exercising on a regular basis. You can stay active by doing something that you used to enjoy or hanging out with people who love you. Staying active can help to relieve some of your stress. One of the many reasons why many people become depressed is because their life is just too stressful. When you stay active you will find that your stress levels lower. When you are around people who love you and support you, you are able to share some of your stress with them. Exercising has also been shown to reduce stress levels too. Staying active can help you to clear your mind and focus again. If you are having a difficult time getting away from any negative thoughts that you are having then staying active can help. When you stay active you are able to clear your mind. When your mind is cleared then you are able to focus. When you can focus you can talk through those negative thoughts. You will be able to recognize them earlier which will give you the chance to destroy them before they take over. Remember you are in control of your life. Depression is not. Staying active can help you rid your life of depression. When you are working on overcoming depression like I have then you are going to want to stay active. You will notice that if you start slacking (like I have a few times) on staying active that your negative thoughts will start to overtake you again. This will not help your depression. The thing that is going to help you to overcome your depression first and foremost is staying active: hanging out with the people who love you, exercising, doing things you enjoy or once enjoyed and more. If you do stay active then you will find you are much more able to do other things to overcome your depression such as think more positively. Start getting active today! |
