Erik: Hello to everybody listening, and thank you for joining us today at Psychology of the Future, The Online Summit. Today I'm introducing Howard Martin, the Executive Vice-President of HeartMath, and co-author of "The HeartMath Solution" which studies the heart/brain connection, and heart rate variability, biofeedback training.
Howard is also a member of the Transformative Leadership Council, an exclusive organization founded by author Jack Canfield. It’s made up of leaders in the field of personal, organizational, and social transformation. He’s also a member of Evolutionary Leaders, which is a group of select visionaries that's been founded by Deepak Chopra. Howard, thank you so much for joining us, and welcome to the conference.
Howard: Erik, thank you very much for having me and I want to say hello to everyone who's listening to this broadcast, from wherever you are around the world, thank you for your time and attention as well. Hopefully, Erik and I can have a conversation that will be meaningful to you.
Erik: Great, wonderful. So Howard, if you can, tell us and all the viewers listening about just the history of HeartMath, what it is and where it came from.
Howard: Well, we've been now around, Erik, for almost 25 years. HeartMath was started by a man named Doc Childre, who's been my friend for now almost 40 years. It started out very humbly. When we — Doc, myself and others — lived in Eastern North Carolina for many years in a self-exploration process, we discovered some things about ourselves that we felt were very, very important related to a new type of intelligence that was emerging. It had been around for a long time, but an evolution of that intelligence.
We didn't have any ambition to be an organization, to be authors, to be speakers, the things that we've done today. We were just putting first things first trying to expand our own awareness and consciousness, and make sense of life. Over time however we got to a place where we realized that we had something that could be useful to people, that we were living in an era of unprecedented change, that people needed new ways of approaching that change in order to make the most of it, to thrive in it, rather than just survive in it.
