7 Ways to Start Your Day Off Right
It is proven that when you start your day off right, you will be happier and more productive throughout the rest of the day. You want to center yourself and get your focus so that even if life throws you a few curveballs, they do not throw you off. There are seven things that you can start doing right now that will help you to start every morning refreshed and ready to tackle the day. These are all very simply and they only add about 10 minutes to your morning routine, so you will not be sacrificing any important rest.
Stretch for Two Minutes
Stretching helps to get your blood flowing and it alleviates any stiffness that you may experience when you sleep. It also eases tension and helps to relax you. As you are stretching your muscles, think of the positive things that you will be doing today. For example, think about the lunch you plan to have with a friend or the movie that you will watch with your kids. Anything that makes you happy is good to focus on. Hold each stretch for about 20 seconds and then slowly move onto to the next one.
Do Some Mindfulness Reflection
It takes only a minute to do mindfulness reflection and this is a great way to prepare for the day. Sit comfortably and concentrate on what you see, feel and smell in your immediate environment. Things like the birds singing outside of your window, the smell of the coffee brewing and the bright sunshine filtering in will put you in a positive mood.
Read an Inspirational Passage or Quote
Pull out a book of inspirational quotes, look them up on your cellphone or grab your Bible. Just read something that inspires you and puts you in a positive frame of mind. This takes about a minute and it gives you something positive to strive for throughout the day. Keep this passage or quote in your mind throughout the day and you can even share it with your family or roommates when you are eating breakfast.
You have your day planned out already and you already know about the major things that you need to accomplish. Visualize these tasks and responsibilities being completed successfully and to plan. For example, if you have a pitch at work, visualize this going flawlessly. If you have an exam, visualize yourself knowing the answers and doing well. This puts you in the frame of mind for these things to happen. It gives you an advantage and even if things do not work out perfectly, your positive attitude will make anything negative a lot easier to deal with.
Take a minute to acknowledge all of the great and positive things in your life. You can choose to jot these down in a journal, or simply keep them in your mind. When you have a strong focus on all of the good things in your life, it is a lot harder for negative thoughts to take over. Being grateful almost works like a vaccine against negative thoughts. Those who are grateful for the good things are proven to be more positive overall and they are able to better handle the times when things do not go according to plan.
Release Your Negative Thoughts
It you have any ill feelings or negative thoughts in the morning, let them go so that they do not have any power over you. Write down any grudges or other negative feelings on a small piece of paper, ball this paper up and throw it away. This gives you a physical sense of letting go so that you make room for the things that are positive. It clears your head and it also has the added effects of reducing stress and even reducing your blood pressure and heart rate. In a nut shell, releasing your negative thoughts is good for your emotional, mental and physical health.
Create a Personal Positive Affirmation
You need a slogan that will get you through the day, no matter what life throws at you. You can use the same slogan each day, or create a new one every morning. Then, when things get tough, simply repeat this slogan to center yourself and release the negative energy. Examples of positive affirmations include:
a) Challenges help me grow
b) I accept this challenge
c) This is only temporary
d) I am strong and productive
e) I believe in me
f) I will make a positive difference today
g) I am motivated to make positive changes
h) I am happy and healthy
When you wake up tomorrow morning, start working these into your morning routine. You can do them in any order, depending on your preferences. The key is to take 10 minutes just for you so that you can get yourself in the right frame of mind to tackle the day. Shut your bedroom door, breathe and get started. If you have a family that relies on you immediately in the morning, just let them know that you need 10 minutes so that you can tackle all seven of these small tasks without interruption.
